Ishtar was the goddess of love and war, above all associated with sexuality: her cult involved sacred prostitution; her holy city Uruk was called the "town of the sacred courtesans"; and she herself was the "courtesan of the gods". Ishtar had many lovers; Ishtar was the daughter of Ninurta. She was particularly worshiped at the Assyrian cities of Nineveh, Ashur and Arbela (Erbil). Besides the lions on her gate, her symbol is an eight-pointed star.
The lion was her symbol (detail of the Ishtar Gate) In the Babylonian pantheon, she "was the divine personification of the planet Venus" [link]
That being said, i used quite a few resources for Ishtar including my mother and her many old college textbooks on ancient civilization's cultures/beliefs.
The biggest problem i faced was the whole 'almost no statues/images/reliefs of Ishtar' so alot of her image i had of her was influenced by Anatolia Story (a manga thats really awesome) and 'Queen of the Night' reliefs. I did find two reliefs (that were specifically Ishtar) that were still intact and were able to actually tell what it was. Ishtar either wore a armored dress OR a cloth wrap with her breasts bare.
She is also sometimes shown with two handmaidens but i decided to leave them out simply because Im lazy and i really loved the focus on her and the lion.
that would be awesome. we're hoping to sell it soon tho! ima see if i can take a better pic without taking it out of its frame (matting was a bitch to get right)
This is true, matting is very annoying. Here's hoping you sell it! And if I do manage to find a way to visit, I'll drag Volty along and we'll all do artsy stuff together!
THANK YOU!
